Pulp premiums - rings, badges, bracelets @ Hake's

Hake's Auctions has a few rare and amazing pulp premiums up for sale. Thought you'd enjoy seeing them.

Operator 5 Ring

Original Operator 5 ring
: This is a very high grade example of a rare pulp magazine premium ring. The ring was offered briefly during the 1934 introductory year of the Popular Publications pulp titled Secret Service Operator #5. The ring was made by the jewelry manufacturing firm Uncas whose trademark of a letter "U" with an arrow  horizontally crossing its midpoint  appears partially formed ( the top of the "U" and arrow point to the right can be seen)   due to a light striking on the inner surface of the ring band: however, next to the Uncas logo is the bold and very deeply incised words MADE IN U.S.A. Those rings sent within the U.S.A, carry only the Uncas trademark and we've offered six of these in 53 years. Those rings, like this one, that were distributed in Canada carry both the trademark and text and this is only our second example.  The ring is non-adjustable (size 9-1/2) and finished in bright silver luster. The silvering was easily worn off these rings  and a large percentage of the dozen or so  known examples are without full luster. This ring has about as close to 100% silver luster as is possible. The top of the ring displays mint and  depicts a skull in white enamel accented by silver luster and black enamel all against a black enamel background. Overall, a near mint rarity originally sent to a Canadian fan of 'America's Undercover Ace'.

Nick Carter pulp premium badges: Nick Carter began as a dime novel private detective in 1886 and has appeared in a variety of formats over the years. In the 1930s, due to the success of "The Shadow" and "Doc Savage," Street & Smith revived Carter in pulp magazine format that was published 1933-1936. Offered here are both versions of the 1" tall silver luster "Nick Carter Club" badge; "S463" membership number is version w/bar pin on reverse while "C972" membership number is version w/stud back. Both were issued by "Nick Carter Detective Magazine" pulp, c. 1934. Bar pin variety has slight even aging to metal and is VF overall while stud version is Exc. Comes w/4-1/8x5.5" "Nick Carter Fingerprint Set" booklet from boxed set. Back cover has ad for membership club showing badge that was available for 10¢. Booklet shows handling wear/aging and has some tiny insect damage by staple. VG and just comes along.

Bill Barnes pulp premium badge and button: "Bill Barnes, Air Adventurer" was a Street & Smith published pulp that began in 1934. The title was changed to "Bill Barnes, Air Trails" in late 1935 and became simply "Air Trails" from 1937 to 1939. Barnes also appeared in issues of "Doc Savage Magazine." Offered here is 1.5" wide silver luster wings badge issued c. 1934 by Street & Smith. Badge has some lt. wear to edges but retains nice patina. Exc. Rare and just one of a few examples we've offered in our 53 years. Comes w/1.5" dia. cello "Air Warden - Cadet" button featuring image of airplane. Button was issued w/Airplane Spotter booklet c. 1943. Back edge has small flake to cello but front remains bright and glossy, displaying Exc.

"Ranch Romances" pulp premiums pin and bracelet: "Ranch Romances," by far the most successful of the Western romance pulps, enjoyed a 47-year run and over 860 issues published from Sept. 1924 through Nov. 1971. Fanny Ellsworth (who also handled the reigns of detective pulp icon Black Mask from 1936 to 1940) edited "Ranch Romances) for half its existence, and three different publishers, from 1929 to 1953. Offered here is the Sept. 1935 issue, Vol. 62, #4. Pulp has two pages advertising the two rare "Ranch Romances Trails End Club" premiums included in this lot - a member's pin and bracelet. Pulp has typical moderate wear to cover overlap and shows moderate wear at bottom of spine. Cover o/w remains clean and Fine. Pages have some margin aging but remain supple and VF. .5" dia. white metal pin has "RR" logo in center surrounded by "Trails End Club - Where Wanderers Meet" text. NM. 6" wide white metal chain link bracelet has .5" dia. emblem at center, featuring same design as pin. NM. Both pin and bracelet are attached to cards which are labeled as "Exhibit," and were likely used in a court case involving copyright. Both pin and bracelet are rare. Both are the actual examples shown in "The Official Price Guide To Pop Culture Memorabilia" by Ted Hake and comes with COA. A unique lot for the pulp collector.
